Summer 2008

Okay, so I had good intentions about updating the blog... but life happens and summers are so busy!! We had a very eventful trip to my parents house in Tyler this year. Mark could not go so it was just me and the kids. No big deal, I've been traveling by myself with the kids since Blake and Claire were about 8 months old (and that was from Memphis) anyway.... We left Searcy after lunch and were doing great, we stopped in Texarkana and got a snack and then about an hour later Claire starts this whimper... it only means one thing "I'm about to be sick!" So I pull over in an old parking lot and she throws up. Okay, get her cleaned up with the last big of a napkin and water that I have and on we go. 20 minutes later here she goes again... this time on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Okay, no napkins, no water "Blake take the pillow case of off her pillow", get her cleaned up and here we go. We stop in the next small town to go to bathroom and wash her face get a bottle of water so we can proceed. Only 45 minutes until we are at my mom's house. I'm feeling pretty good at this point, we come into the Tyler city limits, I'm can see light at the end of the tunnel and the whimper starts again. I pull over this time but there is no room for me to get out and go around on the other side of the car. The brush is too high. So being the good brother he his, Blake holds her hair as she stands on the running board and takes care of business. All better... I put the Suburban in gear and we go no where. Wait a minute, what is going on... I step on the gas and my wheels are turning and we are going no where. We are stuck! I'm so close, it's been a LONG... afternoon and we are stuck in mud???? I call my mom and ask her to call my brother, a DPS (state police) officer to come get me or my uncle (manages a body shop). Of course neither one of them answer the phone. Eventually with the help of 3 strangers and 20 minutes of the pushing we finally get out. Thank you , thank you , thank you... Now let's get to Nana's. It's 5 o'clock traffic time we are traveling around the loop in Tyler at a snail's pace but I'm only 10 minutes from Mom's house when, oh no... crash... yes we rear ended a van. Could this trip get any worse? It was a chain reaction with me being the last car. Myself and the car I hit were the only ones that stopped and pulled over and luckily there was no damage to her van. Thank you , Lord!! I don't think I could have taken much more. She didn't want to call the cops, said good-bye and we finally made it to Mom's. The rest of the trip in the next post.
Cristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17040034307300876653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30765557.post-51283387907395080122008-06-11T08:35:00.000-07:002008-07-14T10:55:29.080-07:00

Welcome to Summer!!

Our summer got off with a bang. School was out only two days before we headed to Branson with Mark's parents and sister's family. We spent an entire week shopping, swimming, eating and of course going to Silver Dollar City. My kids have never been to another amusement park so they are perfectly content with the rides at SDC and loved every minute of it. We were blessed enough to get season passes this year so they are already wanting to know when we are going back. With gas prices who knows??? We returned from Branson late on Saturday and bright and early Monday morning Blake and Claire went to Harding's Baseball and Basketball camps. (last week) So everyday last week Anna Kate and I dropped Blake and Claire off at Harding around 8:30, ran errands and picked them up by 12:00. We would come home exhausted, eat lunch and crash until Blake's baseball games at night. It was a crazy week. So this week we are chillin'!! We've stayed in pj's until noon 2 out of 3 days, had friends come over yesterday for a play date and are basically relaxing. I'm trying to catch up on blogging, scrapbooking and organizing my house. Since we moved in last summer right before I had surgery alot of things were never put in the right spot. So my mission this summer is to work on the house. This has been a very hard winter and beginning of spring for me. Not for anyone else in the house but for the MOM. I have been sick since Christmas. I had a severe case of pink eye that last 10 days and turned into a sinus infection and ear infection, then a stomach virus, the flu, sinus stuff and then shingles. All the while trying to work, keep up with the kids and the house. I've been trying to chill out on things I can do nothing about and learn to live with whatever gets done. I'll try to fill you in on the 4-5 months.

Mark: Mark began working in Little Rock at Altell in December. He really likes the company and the people he works with but no so fond of the drive everyday. He is also selling insurance and loves helping people in this way.

Cristy: Besides being sick forEVER, I've been teaching school (ready for that to be over) and am looking for new opportunites for next fall. I have a couple of possiblities but am spending time praying that God leads me where he wants me. Other than work, I had a great spring EBay and consignment season. The best ever. If you know me very well you know how much I love when this time rolls around each spring and fall. I love making money on my kids clothes and being able to clothe them the way I like for much less. This year I made $1,000 between consigning and Ebay. I love it!! I will admit it is getting more expensive to buy their clothes since they are getting into bigger sizes.

Blake: Mark picked the kids up from school one day and Blake's teacher said he was having trouble seeing the board. I took him to the eye doctor, he put the letters up and asked him if he could see line 2 or 3, Blake hesitated for a while and then the Dr. asked if he could see the first letter, Blake exclaimed an E!! The poor boy has been blind. He is near-sighted and has an astigmatism (Anna Kate is far sighted with an astigmatism). Once we got his glasses, he just kept going on and on about how clear everything was and how he could read the signs on stores, poor baby. He is still doing great in school. He and Claire both LOVE to read. He is also playing baseball for the first time this spring. They have had 2 practices and games should start in a couple of weeks. He's excited and so are we. He has never shown any interest in sports so we are interested to see how he likes it.

Uncle Time and Blake four-wheelin' in the snow

Claire: Loving to read is an understatement for this child. Punishment for her is grounding her from her books. She loves the Beverly Cleary books, the Box Car Children, American Girl books, mysteries, just about anything. She also played basketball this winter and was really pretty good. She had never played before but picked it up pretty easily. In the last game she scored 12-14 points (1/2 of the team's total) and was really good on defense. We always felt sorry for the girl who she guarded because she stuck to them like glue and stayed in their face. She loves school and has a best little girl friend named Mezthely. They are so cute together. Mezthely is teaching Claire Spanish and they try to expand their English vocabulary with big words like famished and devour, etc... It so funny. Their teacher loves it. I hope they can stay good friends. Mezthely's mom does not speak English well and at times makes our communication kind of hard. But it is getting better and they are such sweet friends.

Scarlett Leckie, Claire, and Maggie Collins

(Maggie's mom Beth Howard Collins and I were good friends in college and she was even a bridesmaid in our wedding. I love living in the country and her love of the outdoors. She has always wanted to be outside exploring or just sitting under a tree.

Anna Kate: DRAMA QUEEN!!! Would anyone have guessed??? She doesn't stop talking unless she is asleep and everything is in extremes. She wears me out but is absolutely hysterical. Lots of tears can be shed in a day over such things as her wardrobe, her hair, not wanting to wear her glasses because she's not as cute... real important things. She is beginning to have a hard time being the one left behind. Blake and Claire are still really close and like to do 8 year old things and sometimes that doesn't include little sis. Up till this year, they all pretty much did the same stuff but we've seen a bigger divide this year. She is so ready to read. She gets Claire's books and pretends to read. Which drives Claire crazy. "Mom you know she's really NOT reading that!" Anna Kate rebuffs "Yes I am, you just can hear me, its all in my mind!" I'm sure it is. That is my goal this summer is to have her reading well. She's doing great on her sight words and can read simple sentences, just not what Blake and Clarie are reading. It's so hard being the baby. I keep telling her one day she'll be glad she's the youngest.. but for now it's no fun.

This shows you a little of her crazy personality. She and Blake are more alike than any other combination of the three. And boy do they fight. But they are also the funniest, the talkers and the dramatic. Claire's too self concious to be too crazy.

Hunting egss on Easter. I just had to share. Anyone who knows her well knows she asks tons of questions. Well, this week she experienced her first funeral home experience. Actually, she's been a couple of times before, but she was under two both times so she doesn't remember. Anyway, one of Mark's uncles died on Sunday morning. We only went to visitation on Tuesday night, not to the funeral. So here it goes.

We got to the funeral home and all the little ones were hanging in a foyer with couches reading books and playing except Anna Kate. She kept looking into the chapel where most of the family was sitting around talking. She came up to me several times and told me she wanted to go in there and look around. I told her I would go with her in a minute. ( I was the bouncer for the little kids at the moment). So a few minutes later she couldn't wait any longer, I passed my duties off to the next aunt and proceeded to take her to the front. There was a small group of people I did not know standing in front of the casket so I asked Anna Kate if she would like to look at all the pretty flowers. "Sure," she said reluctantly. As I pointed out all the flowers she kept looking over her shoulder to the casket. Soon as the group left, I took a deep breath and took her to look. The conversation went something like this:

Me: "See he looks like he is sleeping. Has a soft blanket and pillow to lay on, but remember he's really not in there he's in heaven"
AK: "Yea," looking very intently. "Why are his hands like that?"
Me: "That's just where they laid them."
AK: "I don't like it when people die. It makes me sad"
Me: "I know but that is how God made us. . . to die and then we get to see Him. Isn't that cool?"
AK: "Yea, but I like him," (She's never even met him)
AK: "Why did they cut his legs off?" (Caskets are opened only from the waist up)
Me: "Oh, they didn't, his legs are under there."
AK: "So they only cut his feet off?"
Me: "No, no, his legs and feet are in there."
AK: As she looks under the casket, "This box isn't big enough for all of him."
Me: "Yes, it is, I promise."
Mark's aunt walked up about that time and was touching him. You know what's coming.
AK: "Why is she touching him?
Me: "Because she loves him"
AK: "Can I touch him?"
Me: "Not right now, let's go see what Dad's doing"

We walked away, I didn't want to offend the aunt and have a six year old touching her husband.
For the next twenty minutes she kept wanting to go back up. I told before we left that she could take one more look. We answered questions about how old he was (64), how old I was etc., and I kept reminding her my grandparents are much older than that and no one knows when they will die, but she shouldn't worry about it. He was very sick, and now he's not and feels much better.

That night when we put her to bed she still couldn't understand the leg thing. She just didn't think his legs were in that box. We assured her they were and showed her with the blanket how he was laying, etc.

Then last night she asked:

AK: Did daddy's uncle die in the morning?
Me: Yes.
AK: Before he went to church on Sunday?
Me: Yes.
AK: Do you faint when you die?
Me: If you standing up, I guess you fall down, but he was laying in bed.
AK: So he got up and got ready to go to church, then went back to bed?
Me: No, I'm sure he was in bed in his pajamas.
AK: Then how did he get his Sunday clothes on????

Of course, he was in his Sunday clothes in the casket, so he must've died getting dressed for church. That one about put me over the edge. I laughed so hard.

Mark's mom says we're in alot of trouble because AK will never leave a stone unturned. We had already decided not to have a big party, we were just trying to get 2 friends together but could never get their schedules to come together. So... we decided to just have her birthday cake at the Farley Family Christmas. It was crazy and chaotic but she had a what she considered a birthday and got more presents than anyone else since she got Christmas plus birthday. I'm not sure I'll ever do that way again, but it worked this year. This is on AK's actual birthday. Our birthday tradition: the only time you get donuts with sprinkles is on your birthday and only the birthday child gets the sprinkled donut. We put candles in it and sing happy birthday first thing in the morning. Notice she dressed herself for school all in PINK (necklace, headband, shirt and even pink candles). Can you guess what her favorite color is???

Grammy made this cake for her birthday. We 21 people over including our friends Chris and Cathy Elrod and their two boys. We had all the traditional Thanksgiving food and the excitement for the day was when the heating element in my oven decided to burn into two pieces and began sparking and catching things on fire while I was taking the ham out of the oven. Very interesting. After turning the breaker off, we ran the rolls down to Grammy's house to finish cooking and all had a great time. (Luckily everything else was done). The kids had a great time playing outside and most stayed around until afte the Cowboy game was over and everyone had grazed one last time among the leftovers.

Anna Kate, Blake and Jackson

Jackson and Grant

Baby Mia all ready for bed after a long day of playing.
Cristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17040034307300876653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30765557.post-47687373114824739452007-12-28T08:42:00.000-08:002007-12-28T12:52:32.987-08:00

Blake and Claire's Birthday!!

Sorry it has been so long since I've checked in. During October leading up to their birthday, Mark and I had several conversations about how faithful God has been in bringing Blake and Clarie to where they are today. Who would have thought 8 years ago as we were looking at two 2 pound babies that they would be in the top of their class academically and rather tall for their age. God is so good!! We are amazed daily at these two miracle babies.
Cristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17040034307300876653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30765557.post-1692808570214201622007-10-08T16:40:00.000-07:002007-10-08T17:11:45.778-07:00Here are a few random pictures from the past month. This one was with Grammy and Pa's church this past Saturday night. It was hot and the mosquitoes were everywhere but the kids still had alot of fun. They started at Judsonia Church of Christ and went to a member's farm. The hayride last about 30 minutes and followed by a hot dog roast and entertainment. Of course the kids rode on the trailer pulled by Pa's tractor. Thankfully it's supposed to cool off and hopefully be more like hayride weather. Pictures will follow as soon as that one is over. Now on the the really big news in the Farley household..........

Two weeks ago we found out that Anna Kate can not see. I was working with her on her homework and I thought she was having trouble seeing. I went to talk to her teacher the next day and they had just had there vision screening at school. So off to the school nurse and lo and behold she failed it BIG TIME!! So I made an appointment with the optometerist and two appointments later we now know she is far sighted with an astigmatism and a lazy eye (not cosmetically but the rods in her right eye have not developed and are not being used) Hopefully after wearing the glasses that eye will start working and strengthen. They called this afternoon and her glasses came in.... HERE SHE IS.....

How cute is she??? So intellectual. We'll see what the reactions are tomorrow at school. She's a little nervous, but of course we think she's adorable.
Cristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17040034307300876653noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30765557.post-51124760745151839772007-09-08T11:40:00.000-07:002007-09-08T12:53:54.158-07:00

Labor Day Week-end!!

On Friday after school the kids and I took off for Tyler to visit my family for the week-end. My brother's family met us there for a week-end of cousin fun. On Saturday we went to the zoo and Sunday we celebrated my mother's birthday. We arrived Friday night at 11pm to the sound of squeals as we walked through the door. Cody & Larisa had not told Sydnie and Clay that we were coming. They were so excited. Sydnie and Anna Kate are the big buddies. They are at a very cute age and play well together. Sydnie is 4 and Anna Kate is 5 1/2. Here they are on the way to the zoo holding hands in the car and then again walking into the zoo holding hands. I had no clue where I was nor what to do. That is when the little OnStar button came in handy. I pushed my OnStar and they new exactly where I was, sent out a tow service to change the tire added 30 minutes free to my hands-free phone in the Surburban and called to check on things a couple of different times while waited. Three hours later we were back on the road. They were not speedy but hey, they got the job done and for no charge!! I think I may renew my subscription come November. Here were a couple of pictures of the kids while we waited. We had to amuse ourselves somehow.

Needless to say we were exhausted when we rolled in around 9:30 pm. Blake and Claire started 2nd grade and Anna Kate went to Kindergarten. She was so excited. She didn't even want Mark to walk her in. Of course he did with video camera and the digital camera. I am teaching full time this year so I didn't get to go with them but Mark did a great job of getting every moment documented.

This is Anna Kate's teacher Mrs. Doan. We made every promise in the book. Finally she let us put the gas on her and then Todd got to work. The minute he pulled it she started grinning. They also brought along younger brother Micah. They stayed for 6 night and just left this morning. Everyone had a great time, mainly playing outside and playing dress up. If you kept up with my blog from the beginning you'll remember seeing Katie on one of the first entries as Anna Kate's first sleep over. The girls have been tight since they were two years old. They moved to South Carolina 3 years ago but we have managed to get them together at least once a year since. The moms are hoping this will be a relationship that will last for a lifetime. If it doesn't it won't be for lack of trying. The first night they got here the girls decided they would pretend they were sisters the whole week. After my surgery I was laying on the couch and saw this cat out in our front yard. Everytime I would go out she would run between my feet and be so sweet. We decided a cat would be a pretty good pet to have to help keep mice, snakes and other critters away since we live out in the country. The kids love her. We laughed and said we would have gotten a cat a long time ago if we knew it would occupy Anna Kate as much as it has. We don't think she's quite a year old and is very sweet with the kids. This morning she had a bird for breakfast which was quite an education for my kids. Cats are such low maintenance...my kind of pet.Cristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17040034307300876653noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30765557.post-68594149402773109812007-05-30T19:00:00.000-07:002007-05-30T19:11:18.741-07:00
Claire and her Prince!!

Tonight we were sitting in the living room visiting with Mark's sister Paula and her husband Chris when Blake and Anna Kate came busting through the door saying Claire had caught a frog. Ironically, Claire was wearing her Cinderella dress running outside trying to catch frogs. Very typical. She is all girl but loves bugs, animals of all kinds and being outside. Very much an adventurer. I felt so sorry for the frog. After about 30 minutes of torture (for the frog I'm sure) she finally let it go. I put her to bed with her beaming and can't wait till tomorrow to go find more. I asked her if she tried to kiss it and to see if it turned into a prince, especially since she was wearing her princess dress. She said "Mom, that only happens in cartoons!" We left on Saturday morning, got their by lunch, ate and then shopped till we dropped on Saturday. Sunday morning we went to church, ate lunch and then headed to Silver Dollar City for the rest of the day. This was the kids first time at an amusement park and they had a blast. On Sunday we rode rides while Pa stood in line for a coveted seat at a Ricky Skaggs concert for later that night. The concert was awesome. This was also the kids first ever concert. They loved it. The bottom fell out of the sky while we were sitting waiting for the concert but it cleared up and saw a great show. The kids have already asked if we can go see Ricky again next year.

We went back the next day for more fun and rides. And thank you for Mr. Curtis and for helping them make my school." ..... Anna Kate Farley

That was part of Anna Kate's prayer last night. This afternoon we had a party/program celebrating Mr.and Mrs. Curtis who started Curtis Kindergarten and Preschool where Anna Kate attends. They have sold the school and today was a celebration of their impact on the city of Searcy. The Curits' and the Farleys go way back and have been dear friends forever. So I was so glad that Anna Kate was able to be apart of this last year and of the program today. She loves it when Mr. Curtis comes to the school to visit. The students sang a few songs and we watched a slide show of Ms. Evelyn telling how she started school and what her mission was. I believe the school has been open 28 years. WOW!!! They have sold to a Mrs. Lively who grew up in Searcy and is moving back to be closer to her family. She a has lot to live up to with reputation that the school has. I wish her the best and am so thankfully we got to be a part of the Curtis Kindergarten.

Anna Kate had the only speaking part of the program. Life has been crazy around here. We went out of town for my grandad's 82nd birthday came back and began working on our new house trying to get it ready to move in. It's been a month, we're moved but not everything is ready. We are still feverishly painting and trying to get ready for Mother's Day weekend when 25 (give or take a few) of my family members will be here on Saturday for lunch. I've already warned everyone, the house will be clean and picked up but not decorated or fixed up in any way, form or fashion.
Between moving and trying to end the school year, it'll be a miracle if I actually make it until the end of school. When school is out we hopefully will leave town for a few days and then I'll come back and have surgery in June. The rest of my summer will be recovering. Here's a look at our crazy last two months!

Ridem' Cowgirl...Anna Kate couldn't wait to ride horses with Grandaddy. Unfortunately this horse did not want to her to ride. Right after I took this picture Dad was leading her in a round pen and the horse starting bucking. The closer Dad got to the horse the bigger and faster she bucked. It's a true miracle Anna Kate stayed on and that the horse didn't slam her against the fence. Dad said he had never seen a child with that good of balance. He said most adults would've been thrown. She got of and proclaimed "I'm a real cowgirl now!" Of course that was after she stopped crying.

Happy Birthday PaPa!!

Did somebody say P-A-R-T-Y...This is how PaPa was greeted by 3 of his great-grandaughters at his birthday party.

Claire loves bugs. I love coming home from work and just sitting on the swing in the afternoon. It's so peaceful and relaxing. I can't wait for the inside to be done so I can actually relax. Sorry it has been so long since an update. The month of February we were sick it seemed like forever. Anna Kate had the flu for a week and then about 8 days later the stomach virus attacked. We're glad spring is here!! This picture was taken a couple of weeks ago at Claudia Stockstill's wedding at Harding. Who can believe my baby is going to school??? Anyway, she did great during the check up, yes she's in the 95% percentile in height (46 1/2 inches WOW) around 90th in weight, but when it came time for the shots she began getting nervous. The doctor had left the room and we were waiting for his nurse to come give the shots and she was getting worried. She decided she wanted to pray about it before the nurse came back. She whispered a little prayer "Dear God, please help my shots not hurt. Please help it to go quickly and not to be so bad." After she finished she looked up at me with a huge grin, a sigh relief and proclaimed "Mom, God is going to do a miracle today!" I said "what do you mean?" She said, "When kids pray about their shots, God does a miracle and it's not going to be bad, it'll be okay." I was like there you have it. The nurse came in, Anna Kate sat there didn't flinch, no tears, no whine, nothing. Three shots... 1 in one arm 2 in the other. All smiles. Who smiles when they get three shots??? God did perform a miracle in Dr. Ben Wilkins office March 26th. Oh to have the faith of a child!!! Dear Lord, please let her always stay close to you and have the faith to ask and believe.

Cristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17040034307300876653noreply@blogger.com0
